Insights from the ASA International Conference 2025: The Future of Asset Valuation in Focus
From October 19–21, valuation professionals and industry experts from around the world gathered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the ASA International Conference 2025. The event brought together specialists across all valuation disciplines to exchange ideas, explore emerging trends, and discuss the future direction of the profession.
Representing Hickman Shearer, Senior Director James Fox attended alongside managing Director Tim Howard and Director Françoise Rodrigues. The conference atmosphere was one of collaboration and curiosity, with attendees from every corner of the globe sharing insights and expertise across the machinery, business, and property valuation sectors.
Presenting on “Valuing Green Assets”
A key highlight of the event for the Hickman Shearer team was the opportunity for James and Tim to present their session, “Valuing Green Assets: An MT&S Perspective.” The presentation explored how sustainability is reshaping the valuation landscape, particularly within the field of machinery and technical assets.
They examined how the increasing focus on environmental performance and energy efficiency is prompting valuers to reconsider traditional approaches. The discussion delved into how factors such as lifecycle impact, carbon reduction, and technology innovation can be integrated into robust, commercially grounded valuation models.
The session resonated strongly with attendees, sparking productive conversations around the practical steps appraisers can take to incorporate alternative methodologies and sustainability metrics into their work.
Learning Across the Machinery & Technical Specialities
Beyond their own presentation, the Machinery & Technical Specialities (MTS) sessions delivered a wealth of learning opportunities. Topics ranged from data centre valuation and mining equipment trends to aircraft appraisal, semiconductor manufacturing, and even the valuation of quantum computing assets.
The sessions highlighted how rapid industrial change, technological innovation, and evolving regulation are reshaping asset markets—and by extension, the way value is assessed. The MTS faculty continues to be at the forefront of this evolution, driving deeper understanding across increasingly complex asset classes.
Exploring Other Valuation Disciplines
One of the strengths of the ASA International Conference lies in its cross-disciplinary structure. While the Hickman Shearer team primarily focuses on machinery and technical assets, sessions across Business Valuation, Personal Property, Real Property, and Gems & Jewellery offered valuable perspectives on broader valuation practice.
A standout session explored the valuation of homes designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, illustrating how architectural provenance and cultural importance can materially influence market value. This session underscored the connection between technical appraisal and the appreciation of design, heritage, and social significance, a reminder that valuation sits at the intersection of economics and art.
Building Connections and Looking Ahead
In addition to the technical sessions, the conference provided a welcome opportunity to reconnect with peers and colleagues from across the global valuation community. For Hickman Shearer, events like ASA’s International Conference are an essential forum for sharing best practice, strengthening networks, and contributing to the profession’s continued development.
The team extends thanks to Jamie Allen and Tim Roy for their exceptional hospitality and leadership, and for inviting Hickman Shearer to present. Congratulations are also due to the entire organising committee for delivering such an engaging and well-curated programme.
As the valuation profession continues to adapt to new technologies, sustainability standards, and global economic shifts, the insights shared in San Juan will play an important role in shaping future practice. The Hickman Shearer team returned from Puerto Rico inspired, informed, and energised about what lies ahead—and are already looking forward to the 2026 conference in Fort Worth, Texas.
